SFR Brigade Presents

I had so much fun last week that I'm doing it again! Another snippet from my completed SFR, My Name Is A'yen. Here's last week's. And the complete list for this week.

Oh, he had questions. Dozens of them. But only a few mattered. “What kind of doctor are you?”
Archeology.”
What sort of an expedition is this?”
Her face lit up and she leaned forward. “It’s a pre-colonization mapping of the first planet on the Rim. With rings around a double moon.”
In spite of himself he leaned forward too. The Rim had fascinated Master, and he passed it to A'yen. An archeologist on such expeditions was standard. However, staying aloof right now seemed the better choice. “Why are you so excited? There are multiple planets with rings around their moon and potential lost cultures.”
I think it might be the Loks Mé home world.”
He leaned back, excitement sputtering out beneath a cold blanket. “You’re delusional.”
Her chin lifted. “You don’t believe your own stories?”
Why should I? They’re fairy tales designed to instill false hope.” Three hundred and sixty-seven days ago he’d believed them. But no more.
Her shoulders went back and her chin tilted up. “Well, I believe them. And I intend to find it.”

I have a post scheduled for Wednesday with some background on where this story came from and I'll reveal my character templates for A'yen and Fae.

    1. Thanks! Next week I'll drop readers into her head.

  2. Your writing has a lovely flow and I like how the entire snippet has no dialogue tags, but it's perfectly clear who's speaking. The subtle body language is also very nicely done.

Sounds like the set up for a lost civilization hunt (with a cynical expert on the subject). Intriguing!

    1. Thanks, Laurie. I despise dialog tags and avoid them whenever possible. Huge fan of beats.

  4. Arrrgh! I want to know why he fails to believe in fairy tales now!

    1. Then I have done my job as an author! You'd have to read the whole book to find out why.

  5. Please please please forgive me, but you spelled 'Archaeologist' correctly on the back cover and here you have 'Archeology' and 'Archeologist.' I would likely be the only person to notice that because I am an Archaeologist. (There is actually a little known factoid about the US Government spelling it incorrectly as Archeology, which is why the incorrect spelling is seen when projects relate to the government, but anyone in the profession keeps the correct spelling.)

This is a great snippet! I'm definitely hooked and can't wait to read more about this expedition. I love how he says, 'You're delusional.' LOL!

    1. Thank you, Kyndra! I did not know that's the reason for the two spellings. I will most certainly fix it to be the correct spelling.

It's definitely more of an Indiana Jones style expedition, but it's my future and my universe so I made her profession fit what I wanted it to do. Who knows what archaeology will be like 3500 years from now.

  6. Very, very interesting snippet. I love that kind of combination - science and archaeology.
